Villa Tuscolana
Tusculum area was well known to the ancient Romans .
in particular to roman patricians and nobles who chose this area for the mild climate during the summer period, giving birth to unique architectonic treasures like Villa Tuscolana. We remember important names as Lucullo, Catone and Cicerone. Villa Tuscolana was built on the ruins of Marco Tullio Cicerone ancient dwelling.
During the Middle Age the villas became fortifications, giving the name to the whole area Castelli Romani.
From the XVII century the hills around were chosen by cardinals and princes to build residential villas with refined architectural elements. Famous architects and painters were called to project luxurious gardens with nymphaeum and beautiful facades. An example is Villa Tuscolanafa?ade, which was projected by the famous architect Luigi Vanvitelli while he was working at the beautiful project of the Casertas Reggia.
